Abstract

Emeritus Professor Mohammed Arkoun passed away in Paris on the evening of 14 September 2010 from cancer at the age of 82 years. An influential scholar of Islamic studies in Europe and in the Arab world, he made life-long contributions toward rethinking Islam in the contemporary world. Among Professor Arkoun’s numerous distinctions were being decorated as an Officer of the French Legion d’honneur in July 1996 and delivering the Gifford Lectures in 2001. He was also a noted connoisseur of classical Islamic music.
