AbstractThis one-day event was organised by the Department of History and Islamic Civilisation in the Academy of Islamic Studies at University of Malaya, Kuala Lumpur, and the Academy for Islamicjerusalem Studies in the Al-Maktoum Institute for Arabic and Islamic Studies at the University of Aberdeen, Dundee, Scotland. ‘Islamicjerusalem’ is a term recently coined by certain Muslim scholars to emphasise Islam’s historical and contemporary presence in Palestine and the legitimacy of its claim over Jerusalem.
The seminar highlighted the efforts by Professor Dr Abd al-Fattah El-Awaisi - presently Dean of the Faculty of International Relations at the University of Kalamoon, Syria - to establish and promote the academic discipline of ‘Islamicjerusalem’ studies, to institutionalise this discipline within universities in the Muslim world, to recruit young scholars, and to seek pragmatic means of extending it to Malaysia.
