Music Spirituality and Islam

Abstract

On 14 February 2014, IAIS Malaysia organised an evening symposium on “Music Spirituality and Islam”. The program featured three presentations by Professor Mohammad Hashim Kamali, Professor Syed Farid Alatas, and Professor Ghulam Sarwar Yousof. They explored the relationship of music and spirituality and various genres of music in Islam. One of the principal points was that musical instruments do not have intrinsic value of their own; but their value can be ascertained by reference to the manner of use, surroundings and context.
