Abstract

This two-day international event was hosted by the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA). The seminar was attended by about 70 participants and speakers from both Japan and a number of Muslim countries, particularly from the Arabic-speaking world. The event is the eighth in the series of annual seminars on the above theme, which started in 2002. Held then in Bahrain, the first seminar was co-organised by the Bahrain Center for Studies and Research (BCSR) and MOFA. The Japanese Government played an important role in initiating this seminar series and in helping to sustain it during the last eight years. Yosei Kono, the then Foreign Minister of Japan, is to be credited for making this seminar series a reality. The Government of Bahrain, too, is to be congratulated for both their foresight and generosity in hosting the first seminar. As the seminar series progressed over the years, more and more Japanese and Muslims are became appreciative of the mutual benefits. The writer of these lines was happy to be part of the Eighth Annual Seminar to which he was invited as a speaker. This was the first time ever that scholars from Southeast Asia have been invited to attend any of the seminars. Asides from this writer, another Southeast Asian participant and speaker, Dr Bambang Permadi Brojonegoro from Indonesia, who is currently attached to the Jeddah-based Islamic Development Bank (IDB), attended the event.
